SEE ALSO: What We Know About ‘The Plot Against America’-HBO’s Alternate History for the Trump Era Segel, who returns to television for the first time since How I Met Your Mother, credits her for rounding out the character in unexpected ways while he was still developing the script. Lindley, a trans woman, has been acting professionally for a few years now, but Dispatches From Elsewhere marks her highest-profile role to date. The character describes herself as “like, bitter Amélie or something,” and is the most emotionally alluring of the main cast early on. Among the first four episodes provided to critics, the immediate breakout character is Eve Lindley’s Simone. ![]() The series is unafraid to embrace its own quirkiness and, regardless of whether or not it earns each and every indulgence, is rarely boring. There’s a magical melancholy to the proceedings, an undercurrent to the show’s central mysteries. Zach Dilgard/AMCĭispatches From Elsewhere, AMC’s new anthology series created by Jason Segel, is quite a trip. Peter, Simone, Janice and Fredwynn would have all missed the point entirely.Jason Segel as Peter, Eve Lindley as Simone in AMC’s Dispatches from Elsewhere. Watching The Institute, you can see that the actual game was playful and silly and only meant to be taken seriously as a way to bring a bit of wonder back to everyday life. "Is anyone else really high?" asks a random participant at the Jejune "shareholders meeting" in the third episode, and being really high seems like the right state of mind to either watch this show or participate in the real-life Jejune experience. Pretty much everything on Dispatches is poorly explained, which is part of the point, but is also increasingly tiresome even after just four episodes. The show suffers when it foregrounds these characters, although Field gets some lovely moments as Janice confronts her younger self via some poorly explained virtual-reality device. Janice - despite being played by the talented Field - and Fredwynn are far less interesting characters than the combination of Peter and Simone, especially given Fredwynn's grating insistence on dark conspiracies. But whatever deeper truths about life he intends to convey don't come across in these early episodes, which are mostly disjointed and repetitive, as each episode shifts perspective to focus on a different main character. The game (or whatever it is) brings new meaning and vitality to the lives of the main characters, and the real-life story may have done the same for Segel. The show feels like a very personal project for Segel, who's largely been out of the spotlight since How I Met Your Mother ended in 2014. Segel created the series, wrote and directed the opening episode and wrote or co-wrote the next two. Yet, it's still never clear what's actually happening, and the creators seem reluctant to commit to any answers, even about the basic nature of the story. By the end of the four episodes available for review, the story has taken a turn into some hardcore conspiracy territory, and the technology that the characters encounter has progressed far beyond the chalk drawings and community-theater antics of the real-life game. It's hard to imagine the show sustaining even its single 10-episode season (it's been billed as an anthology, and Grant's Octavio, who also serves as the narrator, mentions in the first episode that it's a limited series) if all the characters are doing is playing a really detailed game. ![]() ![]() As the clipper moves through the hair, the center of the blade, which is the sharpest and highest point, does the bulk of the cutting.
